DESCRIPTION:Reducing Our Carbon Footprint: The Sanitation Districts’ Greenhouse Gas Reduction Initiatives \n\n2022 Kappe Lecturer: Wendy A. Wert\, P.E.\, BCEE 2022 Vice President\, AAEES \nFor decades\, the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and its partners have undertaken activities that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to help protect the environment and provide for a more sustainable world. Most of these initiatives produce green power which reduces use of fossil fuels\, a main contributor to global GHG emissions. Another key initiative is recycling water\, which reduces the need to import water and the associated energy required to import water\, the largest single energy use in the State of California. This lecture discusses seven initiatives: biogas-to-electricity alternative fuels commodities recycling water recycling biosolids management food waste diversion green waste diversion The combined GHG reduction from these initiatives for 2021 was over 362\,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (MTCO2e). This is equivalent to taking 78\,000 cars off the road. Come discover how the Sanitation Districts achieved carbon neutrality for the 2021 calendar year. And help us find more ways to reduce GHG emissions to make our communities more sustainable. \n  \nAbout Wendy Wert: \nWert is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer with the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. For the past 21 years\, she has been working on programs that rely on public participation to integrate water supply\, water reuse wastewater facilities planning. She received a B.S in environmental engineering and an M.S. in water resources engineering from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Her studies gave her opportunities to collaborate with others. It was during this time that Wendy developed an interest in effectively communicating math and science to diverse groups. Today\, she uses her position as an engineer to support outreach and education programs that explain how the work of the Sanitation Districts identifies community needs then applies engineering and scientific principles to meet them. Wendy is an award-winning transformative leader anchored in integration\, innovation\, and inclusion. Wendy’s journey started on a farm in Pennsylvania. Her father was a Navy veteran\, and her mother is a retired school teacher. Wendy’s mentor Debra Reinhart\, Ph.D.\, P.E.\, BCEE\, encouraged her to join the Academy. Wendy joined in 1997 and discovered a network of peers to help meet the challenges of our field. Family and mentors continue to inspire her career.

DESCRIPTION:Environmental\, Water Resources\, and Coastal Engineering Seminar Series \nFitts-Woolard Hall 2331 \nAir pollution and climate change in Africa: From low-cost sensors to supercomputers \nAbstract: In Africa\, air pollution exposure has been linked to 1 million premature deaths annually and\, without intervention\, these numbers are likely to climb. Sparse pollutant monitoring across the continent makes these estimates uncertain and also hinders the development of mitigation policies and regulations. Additionally\, some of the most severe climate impacts are also felt in Africa\, despite the continent’s relatively small contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. This talk will highlight some recent efforts to close the air pollution data gap in Africa using a variety of methods spanning from traditional reference monitors\, to consumer-grade low-cost sensors\, to satellite retrievals\, and to air quality and climate models. In particular we demonstrate the effectiveness of well-calibrated low cost particulate matter sensors in several previously-unmonitored megacities including Kinshasa (DRC)\, Lomé (Togo)\, Accra (Ghana)\, Nairobi (Kenya)\, and more. We find that many consumer-grade Plantower-based low-cost PM2.5 monitoring devices\, such as PurpleAir\, Clarity\, and QuantAQ\, perform well (r-squared ~ 0.6\, MAE ~ 7 µg m-3) compared to locally available reference monitors\, but can be improved dramatically (r-squared ~ 0.8\, MAE ~ 2) using a variety of statistical methods\, including linear regression\, random forest regression\, and Gaussian mixture regression. These well-calibrated sensors form the basis of dense urban networks of PM2.5 monitors in several African megacities\, for example in Kinshasa (DRC)\, where the annual mean PM2.5 in 2019 was approximately 45 µg m-3\, or ~8 times the WHO annual guideline. This talk will also present some research that leverages well-calibrated low-cost sensors and reference monitors to evaluate and improve the Africa region GEOS-Chem nested high-resolution model (25km x 25km). We also demonstrate the potential of fusing satellite data with ground-based observations using machine learning to develop high spatiotemporal resolution PM2.5 datasets\, which may be useful in policy and health settings in addition to model evaluation. Finally\, I will present climate modeling results that quantify how both local and remote aerosol emissions changes can have a substantial impact on African climate\, in particular rainfall in the drought-stricken Sahel region of Africa.\n \nBiography: Daniel Westervelt is currently a Lamont Assistant Research Professor at Columbia University’s Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades\, NY. In addition\, he is a Columbia University Climate and Life Fellow leading a project on air pollution and climate change in Africa. He is also an affiliated scientist with the NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies in New York\, NY\, and an air pollution advisor to the US State Department. I am an affiliate faculty of the Columbia University Data Science Institute. Prior to Lamont\, Dr. Westervelt worked as a Science\, Technology\, and Environmental Policy (STEP) postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University. He completed his PhD degree in May 2013 in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

DESCRIPTION:Environmental\, Water Resources\, and Coastal Engineering Seminar Series \nFitts-Woolard Hall 2331 \nAir quality challenges in Northern South America: From the synoptic to the micro scale \nAbstract: The processes shaping air pollution span many spatial scales. In the large and densely populated cities of Latin America\, one of the most rapidly urbanizing areas in the world\, day-to-day exposure to particulate pollution is often dominated by mobile sources in the near-road environment. However\, the seasonality of air pollution in the region is controlled by the long-range transport of smoke plumes from wildfires and agricultural burns. In this talk\, we will discuss how\, by using modeling and observational tools\, we can better understand the nature of air pollution in Northern South America\, identify its more pressing challenges\, and characterize the rapid transformations it is currently undergoing. This research helps identify opportunities to implement interventions to effectively improve air quality in the region. \nBiography: Ricardo Morales is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Universidad de los Andes\, in Bogotá\, Colombia. After graduating with a BS in Physics and in Chemical Engineering\, he completed his PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from Georgia Tech. Since then\, his research at Universidad de los Andes has used modeling and observational tools for atmospheric aerosols to better understand air quality in the northern portion of South America\, and the city of Bogotá in particular. He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications. He is currently visiting NCSU supported by a Fulbright Visiting Scholar grant.

SUMMARY:Human Mediated Landscapes: Anthro-Geomorphology
DESCRIPTION:co-hosted by COPRI and EWC \nDeltaic wetlands are uniquely vulnerable to Sea Level Rise due to their coastal setting\, low elevation gradient\, and high rate of subsidence in recently deposited sediments. Despite the inherent vulnerability\, deltaic societies are also uniquely able to adapt to Sea Level Rise by making use of the riverine sediment transport system to locally increase elevation. Our research investigates how vegetation controls flow and sediment delivery to a deltaic marsh in the Mississippi River Delta. We show that the seasonal vegetation regrowth plays a dominant role in determining channel / marsh exchange\, and in determining flow heterogeneity on the marsh. But also that the interaction of the seasonal flood and seasonal vegetation cycle is variable\, a lesson that has profound consequences for efforts to use riverine sediment load to create healthy wetlands. We further contextualize this research by presenting a unique setting where the research community and the restoration practitioner community are leveraging restoration and management activity to co-develop landscape scale experiments into optimized sediment management strategies both in the wetlands and in the channels that feed them. \nSpeaker: Christopher Esposito\, Ph.D.\, Research Scientist\, The Water Institute of the Gulf  \nEsposito has more than a decade of field and modeling experience studying sediment transport and deposition in river deltas. His research is primarily focused on the connections between river channels and their floodplains\, a topic which is closely related to channel management and planned river diversions in deltas. Prior to joining the Institute\, Dr. Esposito obtained his Ph.D. at Tulane University and his master’s degree at The University of New Orleans. Before entering graduate school\, Dr. Esposito taught math and environmental education in public high schools. His interest in coastal zone management in Louisiana was sparked while leading students on field trips throughout the Mississippi River Delta.

SUMMARY:MAE Distinguished Lecture: “Origami Engineering: Structures\, Materials\, and Robots”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nWe study the geometric mechanics of origami assemblages and investigate how geometry affects behavior and properties. Understanding origami from a structural standpoint can allow for conceptualizing and designing feasible applications across scales and disciplines of engineering. We review the basic mathematical rules of origami and use 3D-printed origami legos to illustrate those concepts. We then present a reduced-order-model\, which consists of an improved bar-and-hinge model\, to simulate origami assemblages. We explore the stiffness of tubular origami and kirigami structures based on the Miura-ori folding pattern. A unique orientation for zipper coupling of rigidly foldable origami tubes substantially increases stiffness in higher order modes and permits only one flexible motion through which the structure can deploy. We couple compatible origami tubes into a variety of cellular assemblages that enhances mechanical characteristics and geometric versatility\, leading to the design of structures and configurational metamaterials that can be deployed\, stiffened\, and tuned. We have designed\, fabricated (using direct laser writing)\, and tested (SEM) this metamaterial at the micron-scale. This resulted not only in the smallest scale origami assembly\, but also in a metamaterial with intriguing mechanical properties\, such as anisotropy\, reversible auxeticity\, and large degree of shape recoverability. The presentation concludes with a vision toward the field of origami engineering\, including origami robots with distributed actuation\, allowing for on-the-fly programmability\, and other interdisciplinary applications. \nBio: \nProfessor Paulino is the Margareta E. Augustine Professor of Engineering at Princeton University. His seminal contributions in the area of computational mechanics include the development of methodologies to characterize the deformation and fracture behavior of existing and emerging materials and structural systems; topology optimization for large-scale multiscale/multiphysics problems; variational methods; deployable structures and origami engineering. Recently (2020)\, he received the Daniel C. Drucker Medal of ASME\, the Raymond D. Mindlin Medal of ASCE\, and the Reddy Medal from Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures (MAMS 2020). He also received the 2015 Cozzarelli Prize from the National Academy of Sciences\, “which recognizes recently published PNAS papers of outstanding scientific excellence and originality.” He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE)\, and a former President of the Society of Eng.
